Firefly

These past few weeks I watched the only 15 episodes that survived the cancelation of the show which spawned countless fans. Well, perhaps not countless given that the show was canceled before the completion of its first season. I had heard a lot about it for several years but my curiosity never got the best of me so I didn’t watch it until now. I’m glad I did.

Set in a space adventuring future ruled by two super powers, the US and China. The main cast is the 9 body crew of the Firefly class spaceship named Serenity. An ensemble cast, very diverse and with great chemistry between all. Given that it’s set in the future and the main characters live in a spaceship, it doesn’t feel like a science fiction. There are no Empires to strike down, no wars with aliens, no quantum bending technology. It’s just a group of people trying to get by living in a spaceship and going from job to job simply to have enough money to continue doing what they do and have some fun while doing so.

Another thing which makes the show quite unique is the fact that has a lot of western elements in it. You don’t see lasers, swords made of light or anything like that; just guns, lot’s of guns. (Couldn’t help myself.) Most places they go are very poor and filled with small towns similar to the ones one would see in western movies. Once they are down the spaceship you’ll most likely see them traveling by horse.

Yet another thing that makes the show quite unique is the fact that there is a vast mixture of cultures in the show. The music is mainly western style with some european and asian touches. The clothing of some characters is mostly asian. And all characters speak mandarin and do so quite often, specially when they’re cursing.

It’s a shame that a show such as Firefly got canceled so prematurely. Fortunately they released the movie Serenity which gives fans the chance to spend time with these characters once more.

I recommend watching the show. Just know from the start that you’ll probably miss it when it’s over and you’ll be sad that you’ll never get to see how the story unfolds and the relationship between the characters grow.
