My 2011
To better understand what 2011 was for me one can simply look at the books I read during the year. To understand how I came to read the books I read during the year one can simply look at the books I read last year. Each year influences the next one, so looking at 2011 without a look at 2010 is an incomplete story.
Looking back at what I read in 2010 I can find that most books I read fell into...

Time to end the war on drugs →
Ten years ago the Portuguese Government responded to widespread public concern over drugs by rejecting a “war on drugs” approach and instead decriminalized drug possession and use. It further rebuffed convention by placing the responsibility for decreasing drug demand as well as managing dependency under the Ministry of Health rather than the Ministry of Justice. With this, the official...

PostWarden Beta 3
A new beta version is ready to be downloaded! This time it includes several bug fixes and a few UI tweaks. The main change is the fact that now when you edit or create a new post in PostWarden, the UI will reflect those changes immediately. Another noticeable change is that the blog which is currently selected on the main window will be pre-selected on the post composer window.
Please keep...
Quashing the Self-Improvement Urge →
We are never adequate, never perfect, never self-confident, never good enough, never comfortable with ourselves, never satisfied, never there, never content.
It’s great to learn and improve oneself but all excesses are bad. Do it with focus and determination, but one thing at a time, with purpose and good intentions.

Why Sugar Makes Us Sleepy (And Protein Wakes Us... →
The reason the orexin system is so important is that it links the needs of the body to the desires of the mind. Several studies have demonstrated that the intake of sugar can decrease the activity of orexin cells, which is probably why we want to nap after a carb heavy lunch. This phenomenon also begins to explain the downward spiral of obesity triggered by our warped modern diet. Because we...

PostWarden Beta 2
First and foremost thank you for trying out PostWarden and providing feedback. PostWarden Beta 2 is ready for download, it contains mainly performance and memory improvements. You should notice that switching between archived months is faster and that images also appear faster than before (specially for older posts who’s images haven’t been archived yet).
I will continue improving the core...
The Psychology of Nakedness →
The idea that a body focus can lead to both decreased and increased mind stands in contrast to the term “objectification,” because it suggests that people seen as bodies are not seen as mindless objects but, instead, as experiencers: someone more capable of pain, pleasure, desire, sensation, and emotion but lacking in agency. In other words, focusing on the body does not lead to...
The Obvious, the Easy, and the Possible →
Coming to know the difference between obvious, easy, and possible takes a lot of practice, deep thinking, critical analysis, and, often, debate. It’s a constant learning process. It helps you figure out what really matters.
